A lot of people have a hard time marketing their products, and when asked to make a website even marketers struggle with it.

In this article you will not learn design, color science, or the mating pattern of chincillas, you will learn what copy should be on your website to make it get sales (which is the most important part anyway).

Above the fold

Back in the day most of the ads that you would see were in the newspaper. The marketers started figuring out that people's newspapers would get delivered folded. So the top part was seen and the bottom part was not.

The part of the newspaper you would see would be called above the fold.

If you wanted someone to read the newspaper whatever was above the fold had to be interesting.

This is also true with Websites.

The above-the-fold is the first thing that someone sees when you open a website.

Mine is:

More Growth. More Clients. Guaranteed.

Simple right?

Still, it works like a charm because it immediately hooks you on something you would want.

The problem is most business owners start their websites with something like:

(Company name)

Or

A picture

Or

Empower growth.

All these just aren't good enough because they don’t tell the reader anything. If you have a hard time writing headlines just tell them what you do.

Unless you are an accountant specializing in tax evasion, then you might just want to hint at what you do.

Who are you talking to?

One of the most important things to know in business is: who am I talking to?

Without it, you are completely in the dark when it comes to selling.

The very simple answer is:

People. It doesn’t matter if you are B2C or B2B you are always talking to people

The copy in your text should sound like something a human would say and

When you talk about your company's values.

Or

When you talk about your commitment to serving the community.

Or

When you talk about the problem that your client is intimately acquainted with.

It doesn't really sound like it. People don’t talk like that. Maybe New Yorkers but let’s not take any notes from them.

If you treat a website like any other part of marketing material you will do fine.
